------- Auburn Elementary School Plans Taiwanese Student Visit
Auburn Elementary School is excited to announce that Taiwanese students will be visiting their school for two weeks in January/February.
In 2008-09, Auburn was the only elementary school in the Great Lakes Bay Region to have Mandarin Chinese language in the fourth and fifth grades. From this opportunity, a sister-school relationship was developed with Hui-Wen Elementary in Taichung, Taiwan. Auburn students began a letter-exchange program with students at Hui-Wen Elementary School and both principals began communicating frequently. During this school year, a class of Auburn fifth-grade students has begun a writing project with a Hui-Wen class. The communication, using an an online communication program called MOODLE, is part of their Media and English Language Arts classes.
Eighteen Taiwanese children will attend classes at Auburn Elementary and stay in homes of Auburn's students and staff. They will be accompanied by their school principal, an English teacher and a Science teacher. During their visit, they will be invited to be a real part of our lives by participating in school, sports and cultural events in the Great Lakes Bay Region. A committee of Auburn Elementary parents and staff has planned events, which include sledding, the Frankenmuth Snow Fest and an introduction to the Native American Culture, as well as visits to the Mid-Michigan Children's Museum, the Delta College Planetarium and the Midland Center for the Arts.
This project has great potential for global awareness and understanding for our community. The goal is to involve all 520 Auburn Elementary students through classroom visits, participation in after-school events or through field trips. The Taiwanese teachers will also weave language and culture into science lessons presented to our students.
The travel costs to/from Taiwan are covered by the Taiwanese families. Community/corporate funding will cover event costs while the guests are here in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
